You found your business on Stowmarket Life and you don't remember putting it there. This page explains how it got here, and what you can do about it.

Why your business is here
We're building a directory of everything trading in and around Stowmarket, so residents can find a plumber, a café, or a dentist without leaving the town's own website. A directory that only contained businesses that had signed up would, on day one, be empty and useless — so we started from public records of businesses already trading here, and checked each one before it went live.
Having a basic listing is free and stays free. Claiming it and keeping its basic details up to date are free too. Pro is an optional subscription for extra features.
Where the details came from
Most listings started life in one of a handful of public registers — the Food Standards Agency's list of registered food businesses, OpenStreetMap, the Care Quality Commission's register, or Companies House. All of them are published under licences that allow reuse. A few we added straight from the business's own website or social pages.
Some registers carry more than a name and address: OpenStreetMap and the Care Quality Commission publish phone numbers, websites and opening hours, and we use those. The rest of your page — your description, and anything the register didn't have — we researched from your own website or social pages. Every listing starts as an unpublished draft and is checked before it goes live. We list our sources in full on Data Sources.
What we don't publish
If you work from home, your home address is not a trading address, and we don't treat it as one:
- We don't publish home addresses. Businesses that work from home are listed by the area they cover, not by where they live.
- We don't publish the names of the people behind a business, including company directors.
- We don't publish personal mobile numbers unless you publish them yourself.
- We don't copy reviews, ratings, or descriptions from other directories.
If you think we've got this wrong on your listing, tell us and we'll take the address down the same way we'd take down the whole listing — see below.
Something's wrong with it
Most likely: we got your opening hours from a page you haven't updated in a while. Two ways to fix it.
Claim your listing at For business owners: type your business name to find the listing, or use the “Add or claim your business” link at the foot of any business page. Depending on the details we hold, we can verify an email address at your business website's domain, send a code to the email already on the listing, or call the listed phone number. If those routes are unavailable, a supported business social page can provide a manual verification route. We show the options available for your listing.
Signing in creates your account; verification gives you access to the listing. Once you have access, you can update its hours, description and contact details for free. If your business is missing, you can sign in and submit it for review. Approval gives your account access to the new listing. The Pro page explains the optional paid features.
Or just tell us. Every directory listing page has a link to send us a correction, or email hello@stowmarket.life and we'll put it right.
Take it down
If you don't want to be listed, email hello@stowmarket.life with the name of the business. We'll remove it within five working days.
We won't ask you to prove you own the business, and we won't ask you to justify it. You shouldn't have to identify yourself to us in order to stop us publishing information about you.
Removal is permanent. We delete the listing and won't add it back.
If you set up a review card, its Google review link continues working after the listing is removed so cards already printed still work. Our retention information explains the review-link and billing records kept separately from your listing.
Your data protection rights
If you're a sole trader, your business details may also be personal data about you, and UK GDPR gives you rights over them. We publish listings on the basis of legitimate interests — running a local directory that helps residents and businesses find each other. You have the right to object to that, and the paragraph above is how you exercise it: ask, and it's gone.
You also have the right to see what we hold about you, to have it corrected, and to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office if you're unhappy with how we handle it. Our Privacy Policy covers all of this, including how to reach the ICO.
