Stowmarket's John Peel Centre wins national Music Venue of the Year
The John Peel Centre just won a national award. Find out what makes this Stowmarket venue one of the best independent music spaces in the country.
The John Peel Centre for Creative Arts has been named Music Venue of the Year 2025 by Songs Behind The Music, a national award that attracts over 18,000 public votes. For a volunteer-led venue in a small Suffolk market town, it is a significant achievement and one that will come as no surprise to anyone who has spent time there.
A venue that does a lot with a lot of heart
The centre sits in the heart of Stowmarket on Church Walk, in a building that has been part of the town's fabric for nearly two centuries. Today it hosts a programme that spans live music across multiple genres, comedy, poetry, art, theatre, screenings and dance. In 2024 it welcomed over 10,000 visitors through its doors. For a venue run largely by volunteers, that is a remarkable number.
And it is the volunteers who deserve particular credit. The John Peel Centre does not run on a large budget or a professional events team. It runs on people who genuinely care about live music and about what this town deserves. Week after week they show up, put on events, welcome artists and make something that punches well above its weight. This award is as much theirs as anyone's.
"We are truly astonished by the support we received during the voting process and look forward to continuing to deliver great live music and events in 2026." — Bobby Dolphin, Venue Manager
A legacy worth carrying forward
The venue takes its name from John Peel, the BBC broadcaster who lived nearby and spent decades championing emerging artists at a time when nobody else would. Artists who went on to define their generations got their first national exposure through his Peel Sessions. That spirit runs through everything the centre does. The quarterly Emerge nights exist purely to give local and upcoming talent a proper stage, and 2026 sees the launch of a brand new series of Indie nights, adding yet another strand to an already varied programme. There is always something worth coming back for.
What's next
There is also exciting news about the venue's future, with expansion plans in the pipeline that will see the centre grow significantly in the coming years. More on that as it develops.
Stowmarket has always had more going on than people realise. The John Peel Centre is one of the clearest examples of that. This award is national recognition of what locals have known for years.
